Wii Rock Band – The Greatest Video Game Ever

Worth The Money

I recently bought Rock Band for my Nintendo Wii gaming system. I’m not actually a huge video game player so I thought it may be a mistake considering the very high cost of the system (over $180 including tax.) But I am a huge music lover and it looked like fun, so I splurged on it. I’m glad I did. It is easily the best video game ever.

Forget Guitar Hero

I already had Guitar Hero for my Wii. I had played it quite a bit at first but quickly grew bored of it as while it can be fun at first – after awhile it seems pointless as it doesn’t have anything to do with playing a real guitar.

Drumming & Singing

For me what makes Wii Rock Band so awesome is the drumming and singing portions. Sure the guitar part can be amusing. But it’s the drumming and singing that make it awesome. Why? Because when you become a good drummer on Wii Rock Band you actually improve your real life drumming abilities! That’s because it’s such a lifelike representation of what it’s like to play real drums. Sure it’s not exactly the same, but it’s close enough for Government work (as the old saying goes.)

Similarly with the singing part of the game. If you can learn to sing a song on Rock Band at a very high level on the expert setting then you are not merely beating a video game, you are becoming a much better singer who has greatly improved their ability to sing in key. How cool is that?

3 Reasons Why the Rock Band Game is Fun

I first heard about Rock Band when my sister-in-law told me about how much fun it was to play with her family. She has a 7 year old son and a 3 year old daughter. Rock Band is a video game that you can buy for the Wii, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 2. After having many issues with some of the current games out, this was one of the more family friendly games out there.

The first thing you will notice about Rock Band is that it is not violent. There are many first person shooters (FPS) that people buy for their kids but know little about. Some of these FPS games pit the hero in the game against people in war. For ever major war, there are a multitude of video games. World War I and II, the Korean War, Vietnam, and the list goes on. The main issue is that children see these images of mortal wounds, shrapnel, and sometimes the drama of people dying in video game. Parents that are knowledgeable about these things should know not to buy video games that are labeled for a mature audience.

Another good thing about Rock Band is that the whole family can play. You can play by yourself with the guitar, drums, or event sing. The family gets into it when (for example), mom picks up the guitar, dad plays the drums, and the child sings the lyrics. There are many songs that you can choose from and the whole family gets into a rhythm. Having the child sing the lyrics on the screen can also be beneficial. The parents can have fun doing the things they always wanted to do, but never had time (e.g. play musical instruments).

Finally, this is a way for your child to be creative. Some kids like to dress up for their songs while their parents video tape them. They can be their favorite rock star and play the instruments on video. Put on a wig or use some hair spray. Some families upload the video to YouTube.com and set specific settings so only their family can see the video. Others take pictures and put them on Flickr.Com. They set access controls so only their family can view them. You really do not have to wait for Halloween to have fun. Enjoy yourself and be creative!

Rock Band 2 Reviews

The folks at Harmonix like to refer to the original Rock Band as more than just a video game.  They call it a “platform for music”.  In that regard, the sequel to the original is more of a “system upgrade”, than an actual follow up to the original.  But that is not necessarily a bad thing, as the original “system” was an awesome game.  Rock Band 2 contains many interface tweaks, graphical improvements, and few assorted new features.  The most notable being some new drum training modes, which will teach you real life drums beats and fills.

But the real winner in this new version of the game is the collection of new songs.  The original recordings include 84 songs, plus 20 more available for download from the online store, and the original tracks can be transferred over for $5 extra.

Another upgrade includes the system hardware.  The drums are now wireless, more sturdy, and contain better padding.  No more tangled mess of instruments cluttering up the living room.

Overall, Rock Band 2 is exactly what you would expect from the series to date.  A great rock video game with some awesome upgrades.  Rock Band 2 continues where its predecessor left off and remains the ultimate rock game to get the party started!

Xbox 360 Game Review – Rock Band

The Nintendo Wii raised the bar when it comes to interactivity. The physical aspect gives you a whole new dimension of immersion in games, a new order of reality. But the Wii has cornered the market in the childish, family fun style games. With Rock Band, the Xbox 360 is back in the game, and with a bang. Wannabe rock and rollers can really get a feel for what it’s like to up on stage, in front of the adoring crowd.

You can, if you want to, pick an instrument and play solo, or have a jam session with others through Xbox live. But this thing really comes to life when you get your mates around to form a band. The complete set up comes with everything you need to rule the world. Lead guitar and bass guitar, a drum kit with four drum pads and a base bin pedal and, of course, a microphone to belt out those rock anthems.

The first thing is for each of you to choose your characters and give them personality with suitably over the top clothes and hairstyles. Next you’ll need a name for the outfit, a big, bad one. Now you are ready to prepare for stardom. New tracks are becoming available all the time from the Xbox LIVE Marketplace, to add to what is already available. Choose wisely and you could be onto a winner.

Rock Band will guide you on what notes to play. For the singer, it is just like karaoke, with the words scrolling across the screen. As you sing, you get feedback on the pitch of your voice on the screen. The more you all hit the right notes, the louder the music gets and the more the crowd get behind you. The stage lights go wild and the joint starts jumping. Hit a bum note and you bring the score down.

If you are in the zone, each band member has the chance to go into Bonus Mode. If you all do it together, you are in Overdrive and then things really go out of control. The music and the noise of the crowd will blow your mind. With your body tingling and your senses reeling, you run off stage and grab a beer, in true rock and roll style.

The great thing is that you can’t lose. If you really hit the spot, you’ll have the crowd at your feet, baying for more. But if you suck, they won’t be able to throw beer cans and ask for their money back. Speaking from experience, you don’t want to go that interactive. Or maybe you do. Something for the developers to think about! As it stands, the adrenaline rush you get is real enough.

This is the ultimate party game and the ultimate Xbox 360 game. If there is a rock and roll bone in your body, you just can’t help getting hooked into it. Get out of your dull existence and take a trip to rock and roll heaven. If you have ever stood in somebody’s garage, plucking tentatively at a guitar and dreaming of what might be, don’t dream any longer. Just jump right in and experience it for real.
